A New Regional Effort Brings Healthcare, Workforce, and Community Together
Posted by: Brian Hernandez
Last week in Smithville, something meaningful took shape.
With support from Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA), leaders from across Bastrop, Fayette, Lee, and Caldwell counties came together with a shared focus, strengthening the healthcare workforce that rural communities rely on every day.
Hosted by our partners at the Rural Whole Health Coalition (RWHC), the first regional healthcare workforce committee meeting marked the launch of an ongoing effort to better align partners across the region.
As a partner in this effort, WSRCA's Healthcare Sector Partnerships Manager presented labor market insights highlighting current workforce trends and needs and helped facilitated the discussion.
Why This Matters Now
Healthcare challenges don’t begin and end at the point of care.
They’re connected to workforce shortages, access to training, transportation, housing, and financial stability.
Providers across the region are feeling that pressure. Healthcare workforce shortages in Greater Austin are often even more pronounced in surrounding rural communities. A coordinated approach can help better address the needs.
A Whole Health Approach
RWHC has been leading this work since 2014, bringing together partners across healthcare, education, social services, and policy to improve outcomes for families in rural Central Texas.
Their model is built on a simple idea.
Health is more than clinical care. It includes mental, physical, financial, and community well-being.
And when those systems are aligned, workforce outcomes improve alongside health outcomes.
RWHC works across Bastrop, Caldwell, Fayette, and Lee counties to:
- Expand access to primary, mental, and financial health services
- Connect organizations to shared resources and funding
- Promote education, screenings, and policy improvements
- Strengthen communication between providers and the communities they serve
- Share data and insights to guide better decisions
This kind of cross-sector alignment creates a stronger foundation for long-term change.
Where Workforce Comes In
A healthcare system is only as strong as the people behind it.
That’s where WSRCA plays a key role.
By working directly with employers, we help identify workforce gaps, align training with real demand, and connect residents to career pathways that lead to stable, meaningful employment.
We look forward to working with this committee to help address the region’s most pressing healthcare workforce needs.
During the meeting, participants:
- Reviewed current healthcare workforce trends
- Identified critical shortages and skill gaps
- Shared challenges from across the region
- Began identifying top priorities that will guide the committee moving forward
This is what it looks like when healthcare, workforce, and community are not working in silos, but moving in the same direction.
Turning Insight into Action
This committee will continue to meet, refine priorities, and take action to strengthen the healthcare workforce across the region.
The next meeting is scheduled for June 11.

The Bigger Picture
When healthcare providers, workforce leaders, educators, and community organizations align, the impact goes far beyond filling open positions.
It creates pathways into meaningful careers.
It improves access to care.
It strengthens the health and stability of entire communities.
This is what it looks like when systems work together.
