Building Awareness of Skilled Trades Careers
Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area, in partnership with Workforce Solutions Capital Area, joined students from across Central Texas for the Metroplex Skilled Trades Rally, held March 10 and March 12. The two-day event gave students the opportunity to explore careers in the skilled trades through direct engagement with trade unions, industry representatives, and workforce leaders.
Hosted by UA Local 286 Plumbers & Pipefitters, the rally created a valuable opportunity for students to connect directly with local trade unions and industry representatives. Through conversations, presentations, and hands-on exposure, students learned about apprenticeship programs, career pathways, and the many advantages of entering the trades.
Connecting Students to Real Opportunities
For many students, the event offered a closer look at careers that provide hands-on, problem-solving work, skill-based advancement, and the opportunity to earn while they learn. These experiences are important in helping students better understand the many routes available to them after high school and how the skilled trades can lead to stable, rewarding, long-term careers.
The Metroplex Skilled Trades Rally highlighted the value of direct engagement with industry professionals, giving students the chance to ask questions, hear firsthand experiences, and explore career paths that are essential to the region’s workforce and economy.
Strong Student Participation Across the Region
A total of 220 students attended across both event days, representing a broad range of school districts and youth programs from throughout Central Texas. Participating groups included Hutto, Taylor, Leander, Round Rock, Liberty Hill, Marble Falls, Bastrop, Lockhart, Pflugerville, Travis, and Del Valle ISDs, along with Austin Youth Works.
Their participation reflects a growing interest in skilled trades careers and demonstrates the importance of continuing to create spaces where students can explore in-demand industries and connect with meaningful training and employment pathways.
The Power of Regional Partnership
The event also underscored the strength of partnership in workforce development. By bringing together workforce boards, educators, trade unions, and community leaders, the Metroplex Skilled Trades Rally helped students see firsthand the many opportunities available to them and the support systems in place to help them succeed.
Partnerships like this play a critical role in preparing the next generation of skilled professionals and ensuring that students across our region have access to information, guidance, and career exploration opportunities that can shape their futures.
Gratitude for Community Leadership and Support
We are especially grateful to UA Local 286 Plumbers & Pipefitters for hosting this important event and for helping create such a meaningful experience for students. We are also thankful to Commissioner Treviño for joining us and sharing remarks that encouraged and inspired students as they explored careers in the skilled trades.
In addition, we extend our appreciation to former Commissioner Julian Alvarez III, Commissioner Representing Labor for the Texas Workforce Commission, for his support in emphasizing the value of skilled trades careers and the many opportunities they provide to students across our region.
Looking Ahead
Events like the Metroplex Skilled Trades Rally show what is possible when organizations come together with a shared commitment to student success. By connecting young people with apprenticeship opportunities, career information, and industry professionals, we can help ensure that the future workforce of Central Texas is informed, prepared, and ready to thrive.
