Stay Cool and Protected: A Parent’s Guide to Summer Safety

Hey Summer Squad—Parents & Kiddos! It’s that magical time of year again—sunshine, swimsuits, and making unforgettable memories. Whether you're splashing in the pool, hiking new trails, or just chillin’ with your crew, Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area is here to help you dive into a summer filled with fun and safety.

Water Safety is a Must

Keep a close eye on your little swimmers around any body of water—even if there’s a lifeguard on duty. Add in some colorful floaties for fun, and don’t forget to slather on the sunscreen like it’s your summer superpower. SPF 30 or higher, y’all!

Hydration = Happy Summer

The Texas sun doesn’t mess around. Make it a habit to sip water all day long—bonus points for using cool reusable bottles. And while you’re at it, rock those wide-brimmed hats and shades like the summer style icon you are.

Play It Smart on the Playground

Before the kiddos slide into summer fun, check that playground equipment isn’t too hot to touch. And don’t forget helmets when biking or skating—it’s all fun and games until someone gets a bump on the noggin!

Hot Car Safety: A Summer Essential

This one’s serious: Never leave a child or pet in a parked car—not even for a minute. Temps inside can skyrocket in seconds. Always check the back seat before locking up. You can even place something you need (like your phone or purse) back there as a reminder.

A few hot car safety tips:

  • Lock your car when not in use to prevent kids from climbing in on their own.
  • Create visual reminders (like a stuffed animal in the front seat).
  • If you see a child alone in a car, call 911 immediately.
