Rural Capital Area Unemployment Rate Continues Slide; Drops to 4.3% in May 2021

CEDAR PARK, Texas ⎯ The unadjusted unemployment rate of the Rural Capital Area of Central Texas continued its slide in May 2021, dropping to 4.3 percent, down from 4.6 percent in April, according to figures released today by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The 4.3 percent unemployment rate in the nine-county Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA) represented 24,544 residents seeking employment. The region’s unemployment rate remained below Texas’ (5.9 percent) * and the national (5.5 percent) * rates.

Within the WSRCA counties, Blanco recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 3.4 percent in May. Burnet County was at 3.9 percent, Williamson County came in at 4.2 percent, and Hays and Lee Counties both matched the regional rate of 4.3 percent. Bastrop and Fayette Counties were at 4.6 percent, while Caldwell and Llano Counties both recorded 5.1 percent unemployment rates in May.

Key Points by Industry for the Rural Capital Area, according to the most recent labor market data:

  • Leisure and Hospitality have experienced the greatest quarterly employment growth with an increase of 6.9 percent.
  • Job gains were also experienced in Trade, Transportation, and Utilities (6.5 percent), as well as Education and Health Services (5.9 percent).
  • Professional and Business Services in the Rural Capital Area experienced the greatest positive annual job growth and recovery with an increase of 4.5 percent.
  • Positive annual job growth and recovery were also experienced in the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities Industry (4.1 percent), and Financial Activities (3.6 percent).
