Child Safety Protection Month: Playground Safety

Happy Child Safety Protection Month. Playground safety is an integral part of this awareness month, as it focuses on creating a secure environment for kids to play and have fun while minimizing the risk of injuries.

Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area would like to highlight the importance of responsible play and help parents with tips that will allow their children to play safely on the playground.

  1. Supervision is Key: One of the most fundamental steps parents can take is supervising their children while they play actively. Keeping a watchful eye on children allows parents to help prevent accidents, address conflicts and offer immediate assistance when needed. Teach your child to use the playground equipment properly. Examples include sliding down the slide while sitting, not standing, or climbing the monkey bars below the bars, not on top.
  2. Equipment Maintenance: Inspect equipment before a child starts to play to ensure that playground equipment does not have loose bolts, splintered wood, or broken parts. Keep up to date on maintenance schedules put in place by local authorities and community organizations to inspect equipment for potential hazards to ensure the playground equipment is safe to play on.
  3. Safe Surfaces: Falls are a common cause of playground injuries. Be aware of the ground surfaces beneath play structures. To mitigate the risk, it’s crucial for the playgrounds you visit to have impact-absorbing surfaces beneath play structures. Optimal choices include rubber, mulch, sand, or synthetic turf, which cushion falls.
  4. Educate on Playground Etiquette: Teaching children the importance of good playground manners is essential. This includes sharing, taking turns, not pushing or shoving, and respecting other children’s play.
  5. Inclusivity: Promote inclusivity in your community playgrounds. Encourage local authorities to ensure that the playgrounds are designed to accommodate children with disabilities. Everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy outdoor play safely.

Child Safety Protection Month reminds us of the importance of safeguarding our children in various aspects of their lives, including play. By following these tips and being vigilant, parents and caregivers can significantly contribute to making the playground a safe and enjoyable space for their children. As parents and caregivers, we can create a secure and joyful experience for all children.
