Veteran's Day: Teach Children About the Meaning of Showing Respect and Gratitude For the Men and Woman Who Served and Protected Our Freedom

Veterans Day is a special holiday to honor all the men and women who have served in the United States military to protect our freedom and democracy. It is celebrated every year on November 11th. Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area gives our gratitude and respect to veterans for protecting our freedom and democracy.

How can we teach our children about the importance and significance of this holiday? How can we help them appreciate and understand the role of veterans in our society? Here are some ideas and activities that can make Veterans Day more meaningful and memorable for kids of all ages.

To start, explain who veterans are and what they do. A veteran is someone who has served in the military. There are different branches of the military, Army, Navy, Airforce, Marine Corps and Coast Guard. Each one of these branches has different functions and missions. Veterans may have served to defend our country and its’ interests as well as help with humanitarian missions, disaster relief and peacekeeping operations.

Not only are friends and family members veterans, but so are many of our neighbors, teachers, doctors, firefighters, police officers and all other professions. They all deserve our recognition and appreciation.

You and your children can also learn about the history and symbols of Veteran’s Day. Veterans Day was originally called Armistice Day. President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11th as a day to celebrate peace and honor the heroes of World War I. President Eisenhower changed the name to Veteran’s Day, to include all wars. One of the symbols that represent Veteran’s Day is the red poppy flower. You can find people handing out this symbol representing this day and wearing the poppy flower to express remembrance and gratitude for all who served.

Participate in Veteran’s Day events and activities. There are many ways to celebrate and honor Veteran’s Day, such as attending parades, ceremonies, memorials and visiting cemeteries and museums. Another way is for you and your child to write letters thanking the veterans for their service and sacrifice. Visit A Million Thanks to learn more: https://amillionthanks.org/letter/

This Veteran’s Day is a great opportunity to celebrate and honor the heroes who have served our country and protected our freedom. By learning about who they are, what they do, and why they matter, we can show them our respect and gratitude.
