Your Next Mission Starts Here: Hiring Red, White & You! Returns to Central Texas
Posted by: Brian Hernandez
What comes after military service?
For thousands of veterans and transitioning service members, that question opens the door to an entirely new chapter. One filled with possibilities, new challenges and opportunities to put years of experience to work in a different way.
And for Central Texas employers looking for dependable, skilled and motivated talent, the answer might be closer than they think.
On Tuesday, November 10, Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA) will host its 15th Annual Hiring Red, White & You! military hiring event in Round Rock and San Marcos, connecting veterans, transitioning service members, military spouses and families with employers ready to hire.
The event takes place one day before Veterans Day, making it a fitting opportunity to do more than thank those who've served. It's a chance to help them take their next step.
And you don't have to be a veteran to attend.
Why Military Experience Matters
Military service is more than a line on a résumé.
It's experience gained through leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, technical training and making decisions when the stakes are high.
Think about what that experience can mean in a civilian workplace.
A military logistics specialist may have managed equipment, supplies and complex operations. A service member with a maintenance background may bring valuable technical and troubleshooting skills. Someone who led a team may already understand how to train people, manage responsibilities and keep projects moving.
Those skills don't disappear when someone takes off the uniform.
They transfer.
And they can create opportunities across Central Texas industries, from manufacturing and healthcare to information technology, transportation, public service and skilled trades.
But there's a challenge.
Military experience doesn't always translate neatly into the language employers use in civilian job descriptions.
A veteran might have years of leadership experience without holding a traditional management title. A transitioning service member might possess valuable technical skills but be unfamiliar with the civilian hiring process.
That's where making the right connection matters.
How Hiring Red, White & You! Makes Connections
Hiring Red, White & You! is built around a simple idea: Bring employers and job seekers together and give them the opportunity to have real conversations.
Instead of relying entirely on online applications and résumés, attendees can meet directly with employers, learn about available positions and explain what they bring to the table.
For veterans and transitioning service members, it's an opportunity to show how military experience can translate into civilian careers.
For military spouses and families, it's a chance to explore employment opportunities and build connections in their communities.
And for employers, it's an opportunity to discover talent they might otherwise overlook.
The event is part of a statewide initiative supported by Texas' 28 Workforce Solutions boards, the Texas Workforce Commission, the Office of the Governor, the Texas Medical Center and the Texas Veterans Commission.
Here in the Rural Capital Area, we're bringing those connections directly to two communities so more people can participate.
The Opportunity Is Real
Last year's Hiring Red, White & You! events in Round Rock and San Marcos welcomed more than 350 job seekers and brought together 124 employers representing industries including healthcare, manufacturing, public service, information technology and skilled trades.
Those numbers tell part of the story.
The bigger story is what happens when an employer meets someone whose experience, abilities and potential might be exactly what their business needs.
Sometimes, a single conversation can introduce someone to a career path they hadn't considered.
And sometimes, the right opportunity starts with simply showing up.

How to Make the Most of the Event
You don't need to have your entire career figured out before walking through the door.
But a little preparation can help.
Bring several copies of your updated résumé, dress professionally and be ready to talk about your experience and what you're looking for next.
If you've served in the military, think about how your responsibilities translate into skills employers understand.
Did you lead a team? Manage equipment? Solve technical problems? Coordinate logistics? Train others?
Those experiences matter.
And don't limit yourself to jobs that sound exactly like your previous military assignment. Your skills may open doors to industries and career paths you haven't explored yet.
Most importantly, come ready to have conversations.
You never know which one might lead to your next opportunity.
