Rural Capital Area Unemployment Rate Inches Up to 3.5% in May

CEDAR PARK, Texas ⎯ The unadjusted unemployment rate of the Rural Capital Area of Central Texas ticked up to 3.5 percent in May 2023, a slight increase from the 3.1 percent rate recorded in April, according to figures released today by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The 3.5 percent unemployment rate in the nine-county Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA) represented 22,730 residents seeking employment, with more than 25,119 online job postings across all industries.* In May, the region’s unemployment rate remained below the Texas rate at 4.1 percent**, but narrowly rose above the national rate at 3.4 percent.**
Within the WSRCA counties, Blanco recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 3.0 percent (up from 2.6 percent in April 2023), followed by Burnet County at 3.3 percent (up from 2.9 percent). Hays County came in at 3.4 percent unemployment (up from 3.0 percent), while Bastrop and Williamson counties were at 3.5 percent (up from 3.1 percent and 3.2 percent, respectively). Lee County came in at 3.6 percent (up from 3.3 percent), while Caldwell and Fayette counties were at 3.7 percent (up from 3.2 percent and 3.4 percent, respectively). Llano County’s unemployment rate in May rose to 3.8 percent (up from 3.5 percent in April).
