Back-to-School Routine for Kids

As summer comes to an end, it’s time to shift gears and prepare for the upcoming school year. Transitioning from the laid-back summer routine to a structured school schedule can be challenging for both parents and children.

However, reestablishing routine is crucial for academic success and overall well-being. We at Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area want to help by taking a look at exploring effective strategies to get parents and children back into a routine for school.

Ease into the school routine by gradually adjusting sleep and wake-up times. Start a week or two before school begins, moving bedtime and wake-up times earlier by 15-30 minutes each day until reaching the desired schedule. Reinforce the importance of a sleep schedule. Explain to your children the importance of a good night’s sleep and how important it is for their physical and mental well-being. It’s good to aim for age-appropriate sleep durations to ensure they are well-rested and alert during school hours.

Develop a shared family calendar that outlines school events, extracurricular activities, and important dates. This will help parents and children stay organized and be aware of upcoming commitments.

Set regular mealtimes. Establishing regular mealtimes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Consistent eating habits help regulate energy levels and promote focus during school hours.

Create a dedicated homework area at home free from distractions. A quiet, organized space will encourage children to concentrate and effectively complete their assignments.

Encourage children to pack their school bags and lay out their clothes the night before. This practice reduces morning stress and helps children be ready to start their day smoothly.

Implement a weekly schedule. Outline weekly schedules that include time for school, activities, chores and free time. Having a structured routine helps children feel more secure and organized.

Discuss academic and personal goals with your child. Celebrating small achievements and supporting them in their journey towards their goals.

Being a parent and a role model for your child takes on the challenge of maintaining your own routine and showing enthusiasm for learning. Children often mirror their parent’s behavior, so a positive attitude toward routines and education will encourage them to do the same.
