Fireworks Safety Tips for Kids

Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA) wishes our neighbors and communities a happy and safe Fourth of July. Lighting up the night sky with fireworks is an iconic tradition in celebrating America’s Independence Day. While we enjoy this holiday coming together with family and friends, it’s good to keep our younger family members in mind with these firework safety tips.

  • Have Your Children Wear Headphones: Children have smaller ear canals, which can affect the pressure in their ears. They need to wear noise-blocking headphones so they don’t run the risk of hearing loss. It is recommended that children stay 500 feet away from a firework display to prevent this.
  • Let the Professionals Light the Fireworks: The best way to keep your family safe is to not light fireworks at home. Another alternative instead is to attend an organized public display.
  • Have a Conversation Beforehand: Fireworks are loud and can be overwhelming for kids if it’s their first time watching a show. Talk with your children about what fireworks are and what they look like. You can also read a book about fireworks to prepare your children for what to expect.
  • Take Comfort Items with You: Bring your child’s favorite light-up toy or blanket. You may also want to consider buying inexpensive fun items such as glow sticks, glow-in-the-dark necklaces, or bracelets to excite them for the event.
  • Have an exit plan: Make a plan before the show starts just in case your child decides the firework show isn’t for them. Stay away from the crowds and find a nice quiet spot with plenty of room so you don’t have to get through a bunch of people if you need to go. Let your child know that you can try again later and that there will be another opportunity to watch fireworks another time.

Please take the necessary precautions to keep your children safe this Fourth of July. Fireworks are meant to be enjoyed, but you’ll enjoy them much more knowing your family is safe this holiday.
