Disability: Part of the Equity Equation! Register to Participate in Free National Disability Employment Awareness Month Webinars

Workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a critical part of our efforts to build an inclusive Central Texas community and a strong local economy.

For a fourth year, Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area (WSRCA) and our partners at Texas Workforce Solutions-Vocational Rehabilitation Services (VR), recognized National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in October, to raise awareness about disability employment issues and to celebrate the many and varied contributions of people with disabilities.

In recognition of the important role people with disabilities play in a diverse and inclusive American workforce, the theme for NDEAM 2022 is “Disability: Part of the Equity Equation.”

Activities during the month included free employer webinars each week, to reinforce the value and talent people with disabilities add to our workplaces and communities and affirm Rural Capital Area's commitment to an inclusive Texas.

See videos of each session below:

2022 NDEAM Webinar 1: Job Retention. Keeping Valued Employees

It’s harder and costlier to recruit new employees than it is to keep the employees you have. We all age and with the aging process our physical abilities change. Making simple accommodations for employees with disabilities is an easy way to improve morale and productivity. Giovanne Turincio, Community Outreach & Awareness Specialist with Texas Workforce Solutions-Vocational Rehabilitation Services, offers some great ideas on how to get this done.

2022 NDEAM Webinar 2: Accommodations and Technologies

Many employers think that making physical accommodations and obtaining technologies to assist employees with disabilities is expensive and difficult. Michelle Szumski, Assistive and Rehabilitative Technology Program Specialist with the Texas Workforce Commission, will show us how to obtain needed devices and demonstrate some of the technologies.

2022 NDEAM Webinar 3: Guidance on Dealing with Long COVID

Long COVID is a very real phenomenon and is affecting many Americans. It is a protected disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Dr. Tresa McNeal, an Internal Medicine Specialist and Interim Chair with the Department of Medicine at Baylor Scott & White Health, discusses what Long COVID is, and how employers can accommodate for it in the workplace.

2022 NDEAM Webinar 4: Entrepreneurship for People with Disabilities

Finding a job is not the only way for Texans with a disability to make a difference in their communities and have a quality work experience. Carl Braun, Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area Business Services Manager, reviews some of the many entrepreneurial opportunities available in Central Texas for people with disabilities, and will highlight some local successes.
