Safe and Sparkling: Your Guide to a Fun 4th of July
Hello families, The 4th of July is almost here, and that means parades, cookouts, and those dazzling fireworks displays we all look forward to. But before the sky lights up in red, white, and blue, let’s take a moment to make sure your celebration is both exciting and safe.
At Workforce Solutions Rural Capital Area, we’re all about helping families make every holiday sparkle—safely! Whether you’re heading to a big fireworks show or planning your backyard celebration, here are some must-know safety tips to keep the fun booming, here are some essential safety tips to keep in mind:
Skip the Backyard Fireworks: According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks cause more than 19,000 fires and result in over 11,500 emergency room visits each year, most involving children and teens. The NFPA advises that “your safest bet is to leave fireworks to the professionals and enjoy public displays instead” (NFPA, Fireworks Safety).
Protect Those Tiny Ears: Fireworks can exceed 150 decibels—louder than a jet engine. Young children’s ears are especially sensitive, so bring along ear protection, such as noise-canceling headphones or earplugs, for the littlest viewers.
Keep a Clear Zone: If you’re using any sparklers or small legal fireworks, designate a launch zone that’s far from people, pets, and anything flammable. And remember: sparklers can reach temperatures of up to 2,000°F—hot enough to melt metal. They should only be used by older children under close supervision.
Never Relight a Dud: If a firework doesn’t go off, don’t approach it. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water before discarding. Relighting it can cause sudden explosions and serious injuries.
Prep for the Unexpected: Keep a fire extinguisher or bucket of water close by. Also, make sure your house number is clearly visible for emergency responders, just in case.
Check Local Fire Bans: Before lighting anything, verify that fireworks are permitted in your area. Many Texas counties enforce burn bans during dry weather, and violating them could result in fines or even fires.
